Sunday tournament rules

Version 1. These are the rules the app shows, and asks you to accept, before you join.

Organiser

The Sunday tournament is organised by Andrei Tchernoivan, Triq Ta’ Grunju, Qala, Gozo, Malta (VAT number 3311-8505), contact: contact@wattsfor.ai. The organiser is its only sponsor and pays the prize.

Apple and Google are not sponsors of the tournament and are not involved in it in any way.

Who can take part

Anyone who lives in Malta (Malta, Gozo or Comino) and is 18 or older, except the organiser and the members of his household.

One entry per person. Taking part with more than one device, installation or nickname disqualifies all of that person’s entries.

Free entry

Taking part is free. No purchase, subscription (including Plus), advertising or review is needed, and none of these improves the chance of winning.

When and how it is played

A tournament is held every Sunday at 8:00 pm Malta time, starting on Sunday 4 October 2026. You can join from 7:45 pm until it starts, in the Mnemocracy app or its web version.

There are 12 multiple-choice questions, asking the year or century of events in Wikipedia’s “On this day” lists of the 7 days before that Sunday (so reading the app during the week prepares you). Each question can be answered for 5 seconds, measured by the organiser’s server from the moment it sends the question; only your first answer to each question counts.

How the winner is decided

The winner is decided by skill alone, never by chance. Only a perfect run can win the prize: every question answered correctly. A question you did not answer in time counts as wrong.

If several players have a perfect run, the one with the shortest total answering time, as measured by the server, wins. Each answer counts for at least the question’s reading time (a few seconds, depending on its length), so answering faster than anyone can read gains nothing. If they are still tied, the prize is shared equally between them.

If nobody has a perfect run, the prize is not awarded that week and rolls over (see “The prize”). Everyone still sees the ranking.

If a question turns out to be wrong or ambiguous, it is removed from everyone’s score for that tournament, and a perfect run then means every remaining question answered correctly.

The prize

The prize starts at US$100 and goes to a perfect run, paid by bank transfer in US dollars (USD transfer) to an account in the winner’s own name (shared equally in a tie). The organiser pays his bank’s transfer fees. The prize cannot be exchanged or transferred.

Rollover: when nobody has a perfect run, US$100 is added to the next tournament’s prize, again and again, with no upper limit, until someone has a perfect run. The tournament after a win starts again at US$100. A postponed or cancelled tournament’s prize carries over unchanged.

The prize at stake is shown in the app before each tournament and is fixed when its lobby opens.

The prize is paid within 30 days after the winner has claimed it and their eligibility has been checked. The winner is responsible for any tax due on it under the law that applies to them.

Claiming the prize

The winner is told in the app when the tournament ends and must claim the prize there within 14 days, giving their full name and an email address and confirming they are 18 or older and live in Malta.

Before paying, the organiser may ask for proof of age and of residence in Malta (for example an identity card or residence permit). A winner who does not claim in time, or who is not eligible, loses the prize, and it goes to the next eligible player with a perfect run; if there is none, it is added to the next prize that is not yet fixed.

Fair play

Using automated tools, other people’s help, several entries, or any interference with the app or the server is not allowed. The organiser may disqualify anyone who breaks these rules, before or after a tournament, and then decides the winner again from the remaining players.

If a technical problem, an outage of Wikipedia or anything else outside the organiser’s control prevents a fair tournament, it may be postponed or cancelled; this is announced in the app.

If the organiser ends the Sunday tournaments, he announces the last one in the app at least 4 weeks before. The last tournament follows the same rules: only a perfect run wins, and if nobody has one, the jackpot is not paid.

Your data

The organiser is responsible for the data of the tournament. It keeps only what the tournament needs: your nickname (shown on the leaderboard), a random identifier of your installation, and your answers and answering times. With your entry, a code derived from your network address (not the address itself) is kept to limit entries per connection. These are deleted 90 days after the tournament. Your IP address and country are used to check that you connect from Malta and are not stored.

For a winner, it also keeps the full name and email address given to claim the prize, the bank details for the transfer, which the organiser asks for by email (never in the app), and any proof of eligibility asked for, to pay the prize and keep a record of it; these are deleted one year after payment.

You can ask to see or delete your data, or complain about its use, by writing to contact@wattsfor.ai. You can also complain to Malta’s Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC).

Law and questions

These rules are governed by the law of Malta. Questions and complaints go first to contact@wattsfor.ai; you may also contact the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA).

The organiser may change these rules for future tournaments; you will be asked to accept the new version before you next join.
